چکیده

Key points Traditionally the female sex, compared with male has been perceived as having greater variability in many physiological traits, including within immune system. We investigated effects of biological sex and reproductive cycle on numbers circulating leukocytes C57BL/6J mice. show that but not cyclicity, a significant effect peripheral blood cell prevalence variability, differences were consistent amongst common inbred laboratory mouse strains. found mice, have immunophenotype, this was influenced by body weight. created summary tables for researchers to facilitate experiment planning sample size calculations cells consider sex. Immunophenotyping (i.e. quantifying number types leukocytes) is used characterize changes during health disease, response pharmacological other interventions. Despite importance function, there considerable uncertainty extent which or influence immunophenotype. quantified multicolour flow cytometry young mice assessed cycle, experimental factors data variability. are no B cells, NK CD4+ T CD8+ monocytes, neutrophils. Immunophenotype composition do significantly change between stages cycle. There are, however, sex-specific prevalence, fewer neutrophils, Surprisingly, immunophenotype more variable weight contributing factor. provide tools perform priori two-group factorial analyses. varies strains, using equal sizes always appropriate within-sex evaluations populations blood.

Sex Hormones and Peripheral White Blood Cell Subsets in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Patients

Background: Systemic Lupus Eyrythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease charac-terized by antibodies to nuclear antigens, particularly anti-dsDNA. Imbalance between production and destruction of immune cells causes cytopenia. Sex hormones have im-munomodulatory effects; estrogen increases the production of autoantibodies in SLE prone NZB/NZW mice. Objective: To investigate the relationship bet...

Diurnal cycle influences peripheral and brain iron levels in mice.

Iron movement between organ pools involves a dynamic equilibrium of iron efflux and uptake, and homeostatic mechanisms are likely involved in providing iron to cells and organs when required. Daily iron levels in the plasma pool fluctuate with the diurnal cycle, but clear explanations regarding the objectives and regulation of the flux are lacking. The association between diurnal cycle and iron...

Changes in peripheral blood immune cell composition in osteoarthritis

OBJECTIVES Immune age-related abnormalities may synergise with osteoarthritis (OA) pathology. We explored whether abnormalities in the blood immune cell composition are present in OA, beyond defects typically associated with ageing. DESIGN Blood was collected from 121 healthy controls (HC) and 114 OA patients. Synovial biopsies were obtained from another 52 OA patients. Flow cytometry was use...

Advances in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Mobilization and Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplantation

Hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) which give rise to different blood cell types are present within the bone marrow microenvironment, especially in flat bones such as skull, vertebrae, pelvis and chest. Interacting factors such as stromal derived factor-1/CXCR4, very late antigen-4/vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, Lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1/ intercellular adhesion molec...
